چکیده

In this paper we present a new thermodynamically consistent phase transition model describing the evolution of a liquid substance, e.g., water, in a rigid container Ω when we freeze the container. Since the density ̺2 of ice with volume fraction β2 , is lower than the density ̺1 of water with volume fraction β1 , experiments for instance the freezing of a glass bottle filled with water show that the water pressure increases up to the rupture of the bottle. When the container is not impermeable, freezing may produce a non-homogeneous material, for instance water ice or sorbet. Here we describe a general class of phase transition processes including this example as particular case. Moreover, we study the resulting nonlinear and singular PDE system from the analytical viewpoint recovering existence of a global (in time) weak solution and also uniqueness for some particular choices of the nonlinear functions involved.

Equilibrium phase behavior and maximally random jammed state of truncated tetrahedra.

Numerous recent investigations have been devoted to the determination of the equilibrium phase behavior and packing characteristics of hard nonspherical particles, including ellipsoids, superballs, and polyhedra, to name but just a few shapes. Systems of hard nonspherical particles exhibit a variety of stable phases with different degrees of translational and orientational order, including isot...

Applying Pareto Design of GMDH-Type Neural Network for Solid-Liquid Equilibrium of Binary Systems (Isotactic Poly 1-Butene (1)-Organic Solvents (2))

Isotactic poly (1-butene), ipbu-1, was synthesized by using a metallocene catalyst. The thermodynamic phase behavior of polymer–organic solvents systems is very important in every polymer application.  In this paper, the solid–liquid equilibrium of ipbu-1 with different organic solvents (1-heptyne, cyclo octane) was studied by a mathematical model. By considering the experiments temperature...

Liquid and Solid Phases of ^{3}He on Graphite.

Recent heat-capacity experiments show quite unambiguously the existence of a liquid ^{3}He phase adsorbed on graphite. This liquid is stable at an extremely low density, possibly one of the lowest found in nature. Previous theoretical calculations of the same system, and in strictly two dimensions, agree with the result that this liquid phase is not stable and the system is in the gas phase. We...

Phase transfer catalyzed reaction of disodium salt of 1,3-dihydroxybenzene with propargyl bromide in solid-liquid biphasic condition

The present work describes, the reaction between disodium salt of 1,3-dihydroxybenzene (in situ formation) and propargyl bromide was carried out in a solid-liquid biphasic phase transfer catalytic system at 50°C. Higher selectivity of the bis-derivative (1,3-bis(prop-2-ynyloxy)benzene) was obtained under solid-liquid PTC condion. The conversion of propargyl bromide of more than 99% was achieved...

Application of Phase Change Materials and Pcm-slurries for Thermal Energy Storage

The idea to use phase change materials (PCM) for the purpose of storing thermal energy is to make use of the latent heat of a phase change, usually between the solid and the liquid state. Since a phase change involves a large amount of latent energy at small temperature changes, PCMs are used for temperature stabilization and for storing heat with large energy densities in combination with rath...

Determination of Some Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in the Caspian Seawater by HPLC Following Preconcentration with Solid-Phase Extraction

A solid-phase extraction (SPE) method for sample clean-up and preconcentration followed by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography (RP-HPLC) with uv detection is reported for determination of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in the caspian seawater. A good resolution was obtained using acetonitrile:water (40:60) as mobile-phase for separation of these compounds. The eff...
